An American will compete for a title in both the men's and women's final this weekend

Taylor Fritz became the first American man to reach a major final since Andy Roddick reached the Wimbledon final in 2009. It was a tough ticket to earn, as Fritz had to get through a tough five-set battle against Frances Tiafoe on Friday.
Fritz took a 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win after stealing the momentum of a match that for a while looked like it was going to Tiafoe. The fourth set was a very competitive one, but a 31-shot rally re-energized Fritz while Tiafoe's legs started to give out.
He had never made it past a major quarterfinal before, but this year Fritz is playing his best tennis and could end a 21-year Grand Slam singles drought for American men. He is looking to become the first American man to win a major since Roddickat the 2003 US Open, but to do so Fritz will have to get through world No. 1 Jannik Sinner.
The Italian star battled to a straight set win over Jack Draper to claim his first berth at Flushing Meadows. Sinner overcame a scary stumble in the second set that saw him land on his wrist. Draper, meanwhile, could not overcome apparent heat exhaustion as he was seen vomiting on the court multiple times throughout the match.
On the women's side, No. 6 seed Jessica Pegula earned a ticket to her first ever major final with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Karolina Muchova on Thursday night.
Pegula has won 15 of her last 16 matches, and that lone loss was against world No. 2 Sabalenka in the Cincinnati Open final in August. Sabalenka also happens to be the opponent she will have to get through if she wants to hold the trophy on Saturday.
Sabalenka made it to the final at Flushing Meadows last year before losing to Coco Gauff. She is coming in with a ton of momentum as she has won 26 of her last 27 matches on hardcourt.

Fritz takes five-set battle, will face world No. 1 Sinner in US Open final
No. 12 seed Taylor Fritz is advancing to his first ever major after a 4-6, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win against No. 20 Tiafoe. He is officially the first American man to reach a Grand Slam final since Andy Roddick at Wimbledon in 2009.
For a good part of the match, it looked like Tiafoe would come out on top after he jumped out to a 2-1 lead. However, a 31-shot rally in the fourth set helped Fritz steal the momentum and force a fifth set. Once that happened, Tiafoe seemed too physically tired to bounce back as Fritz broke his serve three times in the deciding fifth set.

Fritz forces fifth set against Tiafoe
Fritz won the third set 6-4 after a tough 48 minutes. There have been some great moments in this match, but one of the top ones was a 31-shot rally in the middle of this set. Fritz won that point and used that momentum to extend this match.
Tiafoe's serve is still not looking as good as it was earlier in the match and he does look more physically tired than his opponent.

Tiafoe takes third set, needs one more to reach his first major final
After losing the second set, Tiafoe bounced back and won the first two games of this one. Tiafoe's first serve percentage dipped from 73% in the second set to 42% in the third, but his second serve looked better. His backhand also looked solid and he was making Fritz run.
Tiafoe leads 6-4, 5-7, 6-4
