Brutal Honesty from a game developer, this is whats wrong with stellaris. (2024)

You want brutal honesty? How's this for being brutally honest.

I've been in the game developing scene for 6 years now.

What? Designing telltale games? Which has less gameplay that playing around with the options on the Super Mario Bros Super Mario Bros Super Show DVD Menu Screen? I'm sorry but "on the developing scene for 6 years" is after The Last Of Us got game of the year, where the majority of video games are developed with a focus on appealing to people who don't like the game part of the game.

1) Bland boring mid/late game.

Now I'm one of the biggest critics here, the "on probation" is proof of that, but the mid/late game is not necessarily boring. If by mid game you mean by when the mid game starting year is? There is still a lot of development and expanding to do. You keep too busy to be boring.

Late game as in just waiting for wars to happen? I think it's not boring, just different from the start of the game. It's about waiting and biding your time and being strategic on when you declare war, waiting to end a war so you can divert resources, waiting to max out your navy, or just waiting for another war to start on the person you want to conquer.

Now I will say as a pacifist, especially fanatic, it is boring, but for anyone else, it's not so much, that is, if the AI was smart. . .

2) Horrendously stupid AI.

Yes, the AI on Grand Admiral is a joke,

to me

. I have to use several mods to give

myself

a challenge, because otherwise this game is so easy it's boring

for me

.

However, to most people, even people who I consider pretty much, they can still get stomped by the AI on admiral. Heck, Aspiec, a super popular stellaris youtuber, is kind of trash at the game.

The AI is the only thing the player has to play with.

This is something I'll let slide, because playing any 4X game with multiplayer feels like a chore to set up and can be ruined by one person not caring enough to stick around. If they don't care and do stick around, imagine that's you, slogging through it for your friend.

So yes, I haven't read the thread, but anyone pointing this out and saying "play online" is using it as a scape goat. Yes, this game would be the greatest game of all time if I had 15 friends to play with online whenever I want for hours on end, but more than a few people putting more than a few hours into the game at the same time is rare, that's why WoW has gotten so gosh darn casualized compared to 40man raids.

Even some of the best games out there like Witcher 3 have this problem

hehehehe oh wait you're serious,

let me laugh even harder

, that's an opinion. Firstly, longevity is not super important, but Stellaris has more longevity than any game that isn't competitive or a battle royal that has been released since Stellaris.

Most games take about 10 hours at most to finish, it takes at least several days, even for someone like myself who knows his way around 4X games and RTS(won a few tourneys), and for some people months, to be able to win a game of stellaris, even with the dumber AI in 2.3, on Grand Admiral.

Maaaaaaaaybe it doesn't have the most since it's release, but it has more than enough.

Kinkness said:

in the game is the story, atmosphere, and immersion is so high up there

Another opinion, I find stellaris more immersive than witcher, and the stories are ones we write overselves about wars. I had a game where I played with a friend and we started on either side of the galaxy, over a few centuries we finally met in the middle, me, a militarist who was surrounded by warmongering aliens, and he started his own federation and love and crap.

Once you hit that mid game, there is nothing engaging for the player anymore than to mindlessly start wars and take over the galaxy in one boring war after another. A GALAXY that after the first 30 minutes becomes entirely explored, and nothing to engage in anymore (Though the last expansion did help this with randomly generated exploration stories, which I have to say is really great).

You're basically just asking for more/better story.

Uh, was I right about telltale?

Seriously, reading over the rest of your post, you're talking about nothing I really have a problem with. You're basically just asking:

GIVE ME MORE TO READ

and that's a bad thing.

Seriously, I have issues with the devs sometimes, I have issues with the fans

sometimes

most of the time, but Stellaris is a great game. I've been playing games, winning tourneys, playtesting, trying everything under the sun, and Stellaris is my fourth favorite game of all time. Seems kind of underwhelming, but my first console was an Atari 2600.

I love this game, it irks me to see the AI be stupid, to see the galaxy larger than medium chug, but even with those flaws, it's still amazing. It might reach number three if it fixes those. Heck. Starnet already did the first one.

Edit:
This will be the TL;DR of this post. I forgot to mention, you're comparing an RPG to a 4X civilization builder. People don't play 4X games for the story you silly goose.
