How Did Teen Mom’s Kayla and Luke Meet?

According to Kayla, she and the former basketball player went to the same high school.

“We never really talked too much because I was dating Stephan my whole high school,” Kayla said during a season 1 episode of Teen Mom: Young & Pregnant, referring to her ex Stephan Alexander. “Stephan does know him too, but they’re not really friends.”

After reconnecting in college, the Illinois native said that they were “just basically getting to know each other better and seeing if we have a connection, or if something could be there.”

In a teaser for season 3 of Young & Pregnant, Luke is seen proposing to his then-girlfriend while out to dinner for her birthday. “Will you marry me?” was written on the dessert plate.

While Kayla agreed to the proposal at the time, the pair’s happiness didn’t last long. Shortly after his proposal, she and Luke went their separate ways when she asked for a 30-day trial separation during an August 2022 episode of the MTV reality show.

Kayla moved into her mom’s house while Luke moved in with a friend for their month apart. At the time the MTV personality admitted to feeling “relieved” about their decision to take time apart.

“Of course I’m sad. I love Luke, but at the same time, I kind of feel relieved because we have been on this roller-coaster for years just of ups and downs,” Kayla said during a confessional.

The couple’s decision to take a break from their relationship came amid cheating accusations on both sides as well as major family drama with Luke’s mom and sister. Following their month-long separation, Kayla decided to end things with Luke after he failed to make any of the changes she asked of him.

“Last time we were here on these couches, a month ago … I told you there were some things I needed from you or else we’re gonna have to, like, re-evaluate our future and you didn’t do any of them,” she told him, to which he replied with a disinterested, “Yeah.”

“You say you want to be with me, you want to marry me, you want all this stuff, but then I feel like your actions don’t show that and that really hurts,” she added, before Luke dismissed the conversation.

Despite ending their romantic relationship, Kayla later appeared with her castmates on season 2 of Teen Mom: Family Reunion where she admitted that she and Luke were “technically not together, but we live together at my mom’s house.”

Things came to a head during a heated phone conversation between the couple while Kayla was filming in Oregon in September 2022.

“On social media I had seen Luke’s mother straight up lying about a situation that had happened previously with my son when I was gone on another trip,” she said during a January 2023 confessional, referring to Luke’s sister allegedly hitting Izaiah, which aired while she was in Oregon. “I am a little worried now that I left the kids with Luke because I don’t want him bringing them to his mother.”

The conversation turned into a screaming match before Luke hung up the call. After calming down, Kayla called again, admitting, “It’s a worse situation for you because it’s your mom, and I’m sorry that you have to deal with that.”

“Yes, but you and the kids are my family. It’s y’all before anybody else. I don’t know what else to say,” he said before giving his word that Izaiah and Ariah would not be taken to his mother’s house.

While it’s unclear if Luke and Kayla are still living together, he has seemingly moved on with a woman named Dez.

“It’s felt like I’ve known you forever and I know nothing in life is guaranteed, but I guarantee that you have all of me,” Luke shared via TikTok alongside a video of the pair in February 2023. “Here’s to us and the many more memories to come.”
