A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, Sept. 9, 2024, at 11:00 am at First Baptist Church of Lafayette for Gainer Eugene "Gene" Barfield, 78, who went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, September 3, 2024, following a lengthy illness. Visitation will be observed beginning at 9:00 am until time of service. Inurnment will be held at Lafayette Memorial Park Cemetery. Ron Skinner and Matt Stuart, nephews of Gene, will officiate the service.
Gene was born in Marianna, FL on July 27, 1946. His family settled in Louisiana in the 1950's, and Gene graduated from high school in Bogalusa. He attended McNeese State College in Lake Charles where he met his wife, Susie. After their wedding, they moved to Lafayette. Gene graduated from USL with a degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology.
Following graduation, Gene worked in St. Martin Parish Schools for 3 years as a speech therapist. He then began working in the oil industry in various roles leading to his long career in safety. He became a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and was very active in the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) where he served in various roles at the local and regional levels, and was the President of ASSE at the national level in 2004-2005.
Gene was actively involved in his church where he previously worked with the Royal Ambassadors, served as a Sunday School Department Director, and also served as a deacon. He was a devoted, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, was a wonderful cook, and was a lot of fun to be around. He loved picking on all of the kids in the family, and they loved being picked on by him.
Gene is survived by his wife of 56 years, Susie; his daughter, Stacey Ancelet and husband Steven; his grandson, Graham; his brother, Charles (Lynda); his sister, Ann, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Olif and Annie Gainer Barfield, and his sister, Sylvia.
Upholding the honor of pallbearer will be Graham Ancelet.
